The return of retro-futurism with The Jetsons

The future, as seen from the past, will be big news in 2017, with the return of the 60s high-flying family The Jetsons hitting the big screen. Admittedly, tying the movie to the World Wrestling Entertainment brand is a curious quirk, aimed at getting the kids engaged, but marketers will be keen to look into the possibilities offered by The Jetsons and WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! It presents both a great opportunity for brands with a legacy to reanimate their origins, and for technology companies to show just how far off-base or close to the mark those "Tomorrow's World" predictions were. The show helped bring the concept of flying cars, 3DTV, space tourism, video calls and much more to the public eye. While 3DTV may have largely come and gone, video calls are a growing staple of daily life and while flying cars exist, they await the right regulatory environment to take off in some parts of the world. Using that old look for marketing and corporate communications While most companies might not be able to afford The Jetsons' licensing, other routes are available, at far lower cost. For advertisers, there's the desire to reach older consumers, to look at new products in a less threatening way. We can use 2D animation to look distinct, compared to the new hyper-realistic or 3D animations that sell more to younger generations. There's also the traditional nuclear family (George, Jane, Judy and Elroy) or comparable set-ups that can be used as a counterpoint to modern lives and living, all handled in a non-threatening, non-judgemental manner. Business videos, so long relegated to talking heads and PowerPoints, can go with old-style animation and use The Jetsons' style of very traditional working, shouty bosses and so on, to counterpoint modern working methods and lessons from human resources. With a creative mind, going old-school can bring about a non-traditional look to corporate communications or internal training videos. While slavishly following movie trends often ends in failure for marketing brands, The Jetsons provides a distinct look and feel that others can imitate to provide a clear and challenging take on what currently passes for marketing, especially where technology is concerned, with its aggressive lifestyle or super-user productivity focus. If you are an agency looking for some creative videos, get in touch with us to discuss how we can work together to make some old-style content that really connects with your audience.

ABOUT

With a stong, qualified background in Graphic Design and a BA in Motion Graphics, we combine the two to create visually engaging and intelligent videos, adverts and campaigns.

We’ve spent the last 7 years working as a Motion Designer, Creative Director (and occasionally Videographer) for both design agencies and businesses. During that time I’ve worked on all size projects for web clients & production houses right through to TV & Commercial Broadcast.

We now run a video production studio, working directly with clients & also partnering directly with multiple design agencies across the country and capital that have no in-house motion designers, collaborating with them on their video, motion, and animation needs - from budgeting and concept creation right through to delivery, clearance, playout and implementation.
